Description: Chinese culture as reflected in language communication, daily life, and creative works. Intensive listening, speaking, reading and writing at the intermediate-advanced level. Same as CHIN 209. Taught in a mix of English and Mandarin Chinese with more use of Mandarin Chinese over the semester. All assignments are to be completed in Chinese. ASST 473: Topics in East Asian History: History and Memory in East Asia, 1895-2008
Description: This course will explore how the history of Japanese colonialism and Pacific War has been remembered and projected in contemporary China, Japan, and South Korea by the ruling elites, social groups and individuals. how do nation-states use the past to legitimize themselves? How are sites of collective memory created and why do they become embedded with emotional and political significance? Why are memories contested? And, most importantly, how do individuals remember traumatic events amidst the broader politics of memory? We will examine in depth the memory of the Nanjing massacre, Hiroshima, sexual slavery among others.
