NBC Asian America has released the fourth episode of a 5-part series documenting the history of LGBTQ Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
In this episode, "Exploring the Roots of Chicago's Queer South Asian Community," the work of GLAS through its affiliate faculty Gayatri Reddy, and GLAS minor alumna Kavya Vaitla, are featured. The Queer Asian American Archives that is featured in this episode, which is now housed in the Daley Library, was created through funding provided by multiple AANAPISI grants that supported the work of former visiting GLAS faculty, Dr. Laura Fugikawa, and current UIC graduate student, Liz Thomson who co-created this archive. The grant also provided paid internship opportunities for students to work on building this archive, including GLAS Minor alumna Naomi Salcedo, Victoria Tai, Kavya Vaitla, and Shoma Webster, and current undergraduate student Katrina Zabat.
