During a rise in anti-Chinese rhetoric and violence, Chinese sworn brotherhoods such as the Chee Kung Tong (also known as the Heaven and Earth Society or the Triads) spread via San Francisco throughout the Americas and to every part of Chinese diaspora. In this talk, Fredy González will examine the early phase of the Chee Kung Tong's history during the late nineteenth century, and argue for reexamining some central assumptions about the organization.

About the Speaker:

Professor Fredy González's is an Assistant History Professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Dr. González's research concerns the transitional ties among the Chinese diaspora during the twentieth century. He is the author of Paisanos Chinos: Transpacific Politics Among Chinese Immigrants in Mexico (University of California, 2017). In 2016-2017, he was a Fullbright Scholar in Taipei, Taiwan.
