Folding origami paper cranes in solidarity with Palestine.
Materials and light refreshments provided.
The crane or “tsuru” has a special meaning and symbolism in Japanese folklore. Because of their fabled life span of a thousand years, cranes are commonly viewed as a symbol of life and longevity. According to a Japanese legend, if one makes a thousand paper cranes, then one’s wish will be granted. Cranes are also viewed as symbols of peace and strength. This dual symbolism is embodied in the story of 12 year old Sadako Sasaki. Diagnosed with leukemia after being exposed to radiation in Hirsohima, Sadako Sasaki began to fold a thousand cranes to give life to this Japanese legend and to symbolize strength and perseverance. She could not achieve her goal before she died so her classmates took up the challenge and completed it for her. Join us in folding paper cranes to remember and honor our humanity, to mourn the dead, but more importantly, to continue to fight for the living. #CeasefireForGaza is our urgent call.
