Gayatri Reddy Receives the Inaugural Janet Smith Organizing Award from UICUF
"Finally, at noon of the last day of classes we will gather outside University Hall–rain or shine–to celebrate the life and leadership of our late great UICUF president Janet Smith; acknowledge and cheer on our Bargaining Committee; and give recognition to the work of Gayatri Reddy, the recipient of our inaugural annual Janet Smith Organizing Award, and the Department of Philosophy and Program in Global Asian Studies, recipients of our John Shuler Shared Governance and Academic Freedom Award. We look forward to gathering in honor of all your efforts to make UIC a stronger, more equitable university."
---Excerpt from the UICUF newsletter.
Dr. Reddy is an associate professor in Anthropology, and Gender & Women's Studies and an affiliate faculty in Global Asian Studies. She is a sociocultural anthropologist and her research and teaching interests lie at the intersections of sexuality, gender, health, and the politics of subject and community-formation in India, as well as within the immigrant South Asian queer community in the U.S. Broadly, her work interrogates the contours of cultural belonging through the paradoxical dialectic of “alienation and intimacy.”
