GLAS Celebrates Student Achievements

Kekulalani Keauli’i (double Major in Global Asian Studies and English) and Olivia Oberheu (triple majors in Global Asian Studies, History, and Political Science) are recipients of the 2023-2024 Asian Pacific Islander Association (APIA) Scholarship.

Shilpa Parthan (GLAS Lecturer; PhD student in Anthropology) received the 2023-2024 Dean’s Scholar Fellowship from the Graduate College. The award recognizes the most distinguished, advanced-level graduate students with time dedicated to complete their dissertation work.

Andrea Sy (English major | GLAS Minor) will be working as a Youth Development Assistant at the Boys and Girls Club of America.

Kai Belonio (Biology Major | GLAS Minor) and Mantra Yesudas (Neuroscience Major | GLAS Minor) will be participating in a Post-baccalaureate Research and Teaching Fellow Program in the Biology department at UIC this coming year.

Nancy Liu (Biochemistry Major | Minors in GLAS, Math, and Physics) will be attending the Master of Science Program in Medical Dosimetry program at Suffolk University in Boston.

Jessica Yim (English Major | Minor in GLAS) will be working as an Organizing Membership Coordinator at the HANA Center in Chicago.

Aishi Zhao (Neuroscience Major and GLAS Minor) will be attending the University of California Berkeley Post-Baccalaureate Research Program (PREP) this coming year to pursue research and prepare them for applying to a PhD program.

 

Michael Oliveros (GLAS and GWS Majors) received a “Distinguished Presentation in the category of Arts, Design, and the Humanities” award at the Undergraduate Research Forum on April 18, 2023.   The award is for their graphic poem, “Gulugod: Queering Philippine Mythology through Intergenerational Storytelling.” This project was conceptualized in Gayatri Reddy’s GLAS 248: Afro-Asian Solidarities course and further developed as part of their LASURI project with Gayatri serving as their faculty advisor.

Breanna Williams (Psychology Major, GLAS and Black Studies Minors) was awarded the Marie Nesbitt Promise Prize in recognition of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, excellent scholarship, and/or community engagement from the UIC Department of Black Studies in partnership with Change Create Transform Foundation. Breanna is also on the Dean's List with a 4.0 GPA.

Ana Martinez (GLAS and Anthropology Majors and Latin American and Latino Studies Minor) and Michael Oliveros received Highest Distinction in the GLAS Major and will be honored at GLASapalooza

Benedicta Anighoro (Psychology Major, GLAS Minor), Kai Clane Belonio (Biology, GLAS Minor), Faith George (Mantra Yesudas) (Neuroscience Major, GLAS Minor), Ana Martinez (GLAS and Anthropology Majors and Latin American and Latino Studies Minor), Nancy Liu (Biochemistry, GLAS, Physics, and Math Minors), Michael Oliveros (GLAS and Majors), Jessica Yim (English Major and GLAS Minor) received the Chancellor’s Student Service Leadership Award on April 13, 2023.

Shilpa Menon (GLAS Lecturer; PhD student in Anthropology) received the 2023-2024 Resident Graduate Scholar Award from UIC Institute for the Humanities

Abdul Basheer  (GLAS TA for GLAS 100; MA student in History) was accepted to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill PhD Program in History and received a FLAS academic year fellowship to study Arabi at UNC through their Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies.

Ashley Dequilla (GLAS Artist-In-Residence, MFA student in Studio Arts in the Dept. of Art and Art History)  was accepted to the MA Program in Art History here at UIC.
