Fall 2024 Michelle Lee joins GLAS as a 100% Assistant Professor of Global Asian Studies.
Spring 2024 The 30-Year Movement of Global Asian Studies at UIC: An Alumni Panel Conversation is held on January 30. The 8th GLASapalooza event is held on April 23.
Fall 2023 Justin Quang Nguyên Phan joins GLAS as a 100% Assistant Professor of Global Asian Studies; Professor Anna Guevarra is promoted to Full Professor. Professor Karen Su is promoted to Clinical Associate Professor. The Founding Director's Challenge - Road to 50/50 Majors/Minors begins. The Asian American Student Academic Program (AASAP) opens.
Spring 2023 GLAS celebrates the inaugural graduates of the GLAS Major: Kaliyah Cuadra, Ana Martinez, and Michael Oliveros. 7th GLASapalooza is held on April 24, 2023 - first time back in person. Inaugural awardees of the Global Asian Studies Prize are announced: Ana Martinez, Anandita Vidyarthi, Jessica Yim. The Dis/Placements Project facilitates the transfer of the former alderperson of 46 ward Helen Shiller archives in the Daley Library
Fall 2022 Launch of the B.A. in Global Asian Studies. Launch event is held on September 12 in the Cardinal Room from 3-5pm.
Spring 2022 The Breaking Boundaries: Pedagoties of Global Asia virtual symposium is held on April 7-8. 6th GLASapalooza event is held virtually on May 12. The winners of GLAS Swag Contest are announced: Celine Alonzo (1st prize), Azadeh Ghalehnovi (2nd prize), and Malien Tingpalpong (3rd prize). GLAS receives the 2021-2022 John Shuler Award for Shared Governance and Academic Freedom on April 29.
Fall 2021 A. Naomi Paik joins GLAS (50%) and Criminology, Law and Justice (50%) as an Associate Professor; Clare Kim joins GLAS as an Assistant Professor in History (75%) and GLAS (25%); Justin Quang Nguyên Phan joins GLAS as a Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Researcher. IBHE approves the GLAS B.A. proposal on December 14. GLAS receives the Community Partner Award from CIRCA-Pintig on October 17.
Spring 2021 Submitted the Notice of Application for the GLAS B.A. Proposal to LAS on January 31. 5th GLASapalooza held on May 13, 2021.
Fall 2020 Began the work on the GLAS B.A. Proposal
Spring 2020 Formation of the Asian and Asian American Student Collective. Yellow Peril and COVID-19 Student Teach-In is held on May 1. Virtual 4th GLASapalooza celebration is held on May 11.
Fall 2019 Fredy Gonzalez joins UIC as a tenured appointment in GLAS (75%) and History (25%). Inauguration of Chai Guevarra Weekly Student Hangout every Wednesday, 4-5 pm.
Spring 2019 Third GLASapalooza held on April 23, 2019.
Fall 2018 Mark Martell joins as an affiliated faculty in GLAS. Mark Chiang becomes 75% in GLAS. Hana Rafee and Gabe Tiemann joins GLAS as the inaugural visual artists in residence interns.
Spring 2018 GLAS hosts the second GLASapalooza event on April 23 with record attendance. Featuring presentations and a research gallery to celebrate the minors, graduates, and fierce work GLAS undertakes in the classroom, on campus, and in the Chicagoland communities, the event enjoyed a 30% attendance growth from last year.
Fall 2017 Glenda Genio joins GLAS as the Assistant Director of Administration
Spring 2017 GLAS hosts inaugural GLASapalooza event on April 24 featuring presentations and a research gallery to celebrate the minors, graduates, and fierce work GLAS undertakes in the classroom, on campus, and in the Chicagoland communities.
2016 Asian American Studies (ASAM) and Asian Studies (ASST) merge to create Global Asian Studies (GLAS); Michael Jin joins UIC as a tenure-track appointment (75% in GLAS and 25% in History), as a result of efforts by ASAM and CCSAA; Jin is part of the Chancellor’s Diaspora Cluster Initiative; Radha Modi joins as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in GLAS (funded by AANAPISI).  GLAS Opening Ceremony is held. Catherine Becker (100% in Art and Art History), Diem-My Bui (100% in Communication), Laura Hostetler (100% in History), Rama Mantena (100% in History), and, Xuehua Xiang (100% in Linguistics) become 0% affiliated faculty in GLAS.
2015 The consolidation of ASAM and ASST into GLAS is approved by EPC, LAS Faculty, SCEP, the Senate, and the Board of Trustees.
2014 ASST and ASAM faculty meet for several weeks in the fall to discuss the merger; Asian Studies and Asian American Studies officially vote to pursue the merger and submit a proposal for the Global Asian Studies Program and Minor to the Dean.
2013 “Preliminary Thinking Document” written by the newly formed Asian Studies Faculty Advisory committee is submitted to the College to begin plans for merging the programs.
