"A Tribute to My Home Away from Home" by Lopa Bhatt Heading link

I am a senior Physics and Mathematics student at UIC starting my Ph.D. at Cornell University in the fall! I love doing research and reading books.

“The sound of the card swipe I hear when I try to unlock the doors is something I will remember for a very long time. The force needed to pull the heavy door open and the bright lights that hit me as soon as I place my foot inside is an experience that insights emotions. Emotions that cannot be described using words but can only be experienced.”

"Abby's Landing" by Abby Huang Heading link

My name is Abby Huang and I’m a freshman at UIC studying biological sciences on the pre-dental track. Aside from my studies, I enjoy spending my free time doing art, hiking, or reading–all with a cup of coffee on hand.

“My mother told me dentistry would give me freedom, flexibility, and financial stability. To be my own boss, I would be able to set my own hours and vacation days. She spoke true; the opportunity would have been snatched up in an instant by anyone else. Nevertheless, I would have to escape her version of freedom to embrace my own.”

"The Legendary Ms. Garcia" by Jennifer Lopez Heading link

My name is Jennifer Lopez; I am currently 20 years old, I’m a proud Mexican American born in Los Angeles California, and I love reading and writing in my free time 🙂 !

“It’s pretty much impossible for anyone in my neighborhood to miss seeing Ms.Garcia; she’s a face everyone gets happy seeing. Ms.Garcia has a youthful complexion with her long straight light brown hair, no wrinkles insight, and light brown almond-shaped eyes: she’s 50, yet she looks like she’s 30; that’s how good she has been taken care of herself. She runs a panaderia (bakery shop) two blocks down from my house but, anyone can smell the delicious sweet-smelling scent of her pastries right outside their windows and doors if they are in close range to the panaderia: which thankfully I get to be so I can keep smelling the heavenly scent of vanilla and cinnamon.”

"My Home Where Time Stands Still" by Megan Lee Heading link

Hi name is Megan Lee, I’m 18 years old, Korean American, and love baking and gardening in my free time!

“There is nothing I like to do better than begin preparing to make doughnuts. As I prepare for doughnuts, I prepare for you to come to my home, knock on the door, and enjoy them. It is one of the experiences I hope you remember me by —perhaps the only immortality I will achieve after my long life has ended— and when I say experience, I do not mean the actual doughnuts. I mean the comfort I offer, the raw emotions, the humanly sentiments that stir within us, aching to spill out, finally at peace in my humble home in front of a plate of my warm doughnuts.”

"The Woman Who Makes Splendid Soup" by Sabrina Ng Heading link

Sabrina Ng is a first-year student majoring in Chemical Engineering. This is her creative writing tribute to her grandma, inspired by “The Women Who Make Swell Doughnuts” by Toshio Mori.

“There is nothing I like to do better than to go to her house and ring the doorbell and when she opens the door, to go in. It is one of the experiences I will never forget — perhaps the only everlasting soul that I will ever be lucky enough to meet — and when I say the experience, I do not mean the mechanical movements, the calibers of our lives. I mean by experience the seconds ticking inside of us, the time slows, not to a stop, but enough to halt our physical movements to remind us to appreciate the minute moments.”
