Fall 2023: GLAS/GWS/ANTH 248—Afro-Asian Solidarities

Instructor: Gayatri Reddy

There are two assignments reflected in this course display:

  1.  A mini-zine that captures student’s (first) experiences of racialization. The prompt for this assignment was the following: When was the first time you were aware of race? Using the format of a mini-zine, describe this moment/experience, and drawing on the material we have read in the course thus far, conduct a social analysis of your own experience, exploring some of the contexts that might have influenced your experience.
  2. A final project that asked students to conceptualize “cross-racial solidarity” through the work of a movement or organization and create an educational zine pitched to a high-school audience. The prompt for this assignment was the following: Drawing inspiration from the work of the Original Rainbow Coalition, the Third World Liberation Front, the Non-Aligned Movement, and other movements we read about in class that intentionally brought communities together to create a social movement or fight a social justice issue, you will pick one such movement and create an educational zine pitched at high schoolers. You will research, play with, and visually conceptualize your interpretation of these ‘solidarity’ movements, asking what solidarity means, and what it could be and do, and for whom.
